José Martí Carvajal

José Martí-Carvajal (b. 1955, no relation to the Cuban poet and patriot José Martí), is an environmental engineer who lives and works in Puerto Rico. Born in Cuba, his family moved to Puerto Rico in 1961, when his father broke with the Cuban revolution. He received his elementary and high school education in Puerto Rico and later entered the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, where he received a degree in civil engineering and later did graduate work on environmental engineering. He performed further graduate work at Northeastern University, in Boston, Massachusetts. Subsequently, he returned to Puerto Rico where he worked for five years for an international consulting firm. In 1983, he founded Technical Consulting Group, a consulting engineering firm based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He has been involved in multiple projects in Puerto Rico, Latin America and the United States.

He has authored publications and presentations related to environmental engineering, water quality and public policy, has a special interest in the technical bases of environmental regulations, and is a frequent lecturer in technical forums. He has also served in leadership positions in several professional societies in Puerto Rico, the United States and Latin America.
